Step 1

Bring everything Out

The first step in organizing your garage is to take every item off the shelves and put them in piles based on category. By pulling everything out, you can see all the unused items that are taking up space.

Step 2

Donate any items that you haven’t used in the last 6-12 months.

If possible, put everything away in containers. I used empty moving boxes and tubs. I made sure to put similar items in the same containers. Oddly shaped items like bikes and extension chords were placed on hooks. Small items like nails and screws were organized in tool tubs.

Proper Storage

Step 4

Make it all Fit

The last step is putting everything away in a beautiful way. Not only should you put similar items on the same shelf, but you should also consider placing tubs of the same color together.

Let’s face it, there are some things in your garage that need to stay hidden or out of the way. For things like lawn chairs, buckets, and tools I tried to hide these items under my work bench, and inside our red wagon. For bikes and strollers, the best strategy I could find was folding them up in a corner out of the way.

While it doesn’t HAVE to be clean when selling your home, if you organize your garage, sellers will be impressed with how much storage space there is to offer.
